Breastfeeding Resources
Breastfeeding the Hospitalized Baby has excellent advice and encouragement for moms who are pumping for a baby in the hospital. There are also great links on Breastmilk and the Preterm Baby and Resources for Parents of Preemies. Nursing an adopted baby is another reason that many women decide to pump. Take a break and read some touching stories about breast milk donations and pumping to relactate. Wide Smiles has information on pumping, especially for children with cleft palate. La Leche League International Breastfeeding Information -- the FAQ has a section on Working and Breastfeeding that covers choosing a pump, frequency, and storing breastmilk. Returning to work & breastfeeding is probably the most common reason that woman pump milk. World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) includes a section on Breastfeeding Rights of Working Women, and The Working Cow has good tips for working while breasfeeding, including sections on "Preparing for work," "Buying a pump," "Increasing your supply" and there's even a survey! Medication during lactation. There are actually very few medical conditions that require a medication contraindicated during lactation. BF & Meds -- a complete list of drugs you might be taking while breastfeeding, with links to more information. Also, Tom Hale's book is a standard reference on medications while lactating. Herbal Galactagogues are useful for boosting milk supply. Also known as Herbal Remedies for Increasing Milk Supply. Treatment options for Yeast Infestations was put together by one of our very own list members. Nutrition recommendations for breastfeeding mothers. This has some good info on how nutrients are used by the mother's body. Allergy elimination diet. Many times colic, skin rashes, and other problems are caused by an allergy to something the mother is eating. This does not mean that the mom should stop breastfeeding! This site gives some dietary recommendations to avoid common allergens. The Vegan diet during pregnancy and lactation. Dr. Jack Newman is a pediatrician with some excellent articles on breastfeeding, including advice for working moms. Human milk banking is a wonderful way to make use of surplus pumped milk!
